When high-quality, relevant and trustworthy data is sourced, it can help all of us to make better informed decisions. At a time when our planet faces complex challenges, it’s vital that we make the most of this data in the most responsible way.
Serving the common good together, by using data differently
Data is an essential part of our everyday lives. But many of us feel confused, concerned or sidelined by it, because the digital world moves so fast. And yet, the data that concerns us has amazing potential. If it’s used responsibly, it will help us to make better informed decisions about our future.
We must unlock data’s potential now
Time is not on our side as our planet faces deep social, economic and environmental change, heightened by a succession of crises. These pressing challenges show how interdependent we are. To tackle them, we need collaboration and access to meaningful, trustworthy data in ways that allow us to keep pace with events and make critical decisions under pressure or in anticipatory ways.
So, what is
The Data Tank is much more than reusing data: The Data Tank is about people solving problems.
We have an interdisciplinary and diverse team working to deliver the following core activities:
Research and Evidence
Independent, rigorous and action research are key to improving the knowledge available on how data reuse can be done responsibly, systematically and sustainably. Rigorous research is also key to advance our policy and advocacy work with credibility.
Skills and capacity strengthening
Our Data Stewardship programme is by large a skills and capacity strengthening activity as we seek to build the human infrastructure that is needed in organisations and institutions for data reuse and for legislation on data governance and reuse to be implementable.
Policy engagement and thought leadership
Our research and collaborative work gives us insights that are important for policymaking. We convene meetings, events, write articles and take part in policymaking processes through our evidence and thought leadership.
Doing This Together
We partner with organisations and communities who believe in our mission to serve the common good by using data differently. These partnerships span private, public and non-profit sectors, and include universities, businesses, governmental bodies and civil society. We pool the learning from people doing innovative hands-on work, identifying best practice from projects around the world. And we share those examples with policymakers, so they can draw on the latest thinking – and doing – to anticipate and shape Data Governance.
